Curriculum Planning

I. Curriculums frame and Development Blueprint

The planning of the curriculum is based on: (1) integrating present teaching resources. (2) emphasizing basic and sub-field specialties of aquatic science and technology; (3) promoting industry-academia exchanges and cooperation; (4) enhancing the learning of multiple and integrated courses; (5) strengthening students' employment competitiveness.

Course Planning of this program: A freshman in Keelung campus can study basic professional courses. Then during sophomore year, study common professional courses in Matsu campus. From junior to senior year, study cross-disciplinary courses in Keelung campus, according to their interests, including Biology, Food and Aquaculture etc. In the end, students obtain a double major degree and arrange an internship in enterprises.

II. Overview of courses

A. Credits: The minimum graduation credits are 128 credits, 98 credits are required and 30 credits are elective. Students should apply and obtain one of the following degrees or certificates from the Departments of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Aquaculture, Food Science: (1) Double Major Degree, (2) Minor Degree, (3) Sub-Specialty Certificate.

B.Curriculum planning: It is divided by the three components, including the courses of required, elective, and internship and field trip.

I. Required course includes:

  1. The required courses for common education by NTOU: 28 credits, including Chinese, English, Second Foreign Language, Liberal Arts, Physical Education and other curriculum areas.
  2. The courses of specialty required by CLS: 27 credits, which are required courses in College of Life Sciences, including Chemistry, Biology, Calculus, Introduction Fishery Sciences, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biostatistics and other necessary disciplines, as well as some basic information courses, such as programming and data processing information etc.
  3. The courses of specialty required by departments: 43 credits, including
    1. Core courses in Marine Biotechnology: Marine Biotechnology and Biotech Industries, Marine Biodiversity, Biology(II), Cell Biology, Biochemistry(II), Biotechnology and Biotechnique, etc.
    2. Courses in Matsu campus: Phycology, Ecology, Marine Active Substance Utilization and Drug Development, Marine Economics and other Matsu characteristic courses.
  4. Marine Bioindustry domain: 21-30 credits. After completing the required courses of common education and specialty, students can choose the appropriate courses within departments as their second major according to their interests. There are 3 professional domains divided into life science, aquaculture science, and food science.

II. Elective courses: All courses offered by NTOU can be recognized as elective credits. Only the required courses of this program are limited to the courses offered by College of Life Sciences.

III. Internship and field trip:

  1. Marine Industry Internship: Arrange students to practice internship in Matsu government institutes and companies, so that students can understand Matsu's industrial development.
  2. Global Marine Industry, Marine Industry Investigation: The university contacts and arranges students to go to other industrial units in Fujian Province, China and practice internship to understand the industrial development in Fujian.
  3. Aquaculture Internship, Food Industry Extracurricular Practice, Practical Training of Undergraduate Students in Industry: Apply for internship in government institutes, companies and enterprises in Taiwan.
  4. Marine Biotechnology Industry Internship, Industrial Training in Aquaculture: The students are arranged to practice for half a year in both domestic and foreign enterprises in the first semester of senior year.
